Hi from Violet Town.... Most of our hens have been at my mother's place in the country since mid November when we went on the Great Vic Bike ride. We also had so many hatchings that I lost count of the number of chicks - it has been a crazy couple of months, all the chooks are mixed up and some of them even I can't tell apart! Bobby is in town and Colin has moved to the country since he has decided to take over and be the head rooster. Colin has been giving Bobby a hard time so they can't live together any more. We are planning to on holidays for the last couple of weeks of January and my mother is moving off the farm at the end of February so now is a good time to downsize. Bobby is free to a good home if you would like him. He is a beautiful rooster - darker colouring, large wonderful shape, very quiet and a real gentleman. He is able to service up to 5 hens and will produce lovely chicks. We have a couple of little girls still available - they must have been hiding in the daisy bush when I collected all the pullets in December and I missed them. They are between 6 and 10 weeks old. We also need to find homes for some older ladies - most of them are around 4 years old so should live another 4-5 years. They are all healthy and are still laying. I'll keep the grandmas because I couldn't part with my old girls. For the first time we are offering a Clucky Chook Package - a hen and 8 fertile eggs to hatch, along with detailed instructions and of course you can always email me for some advice and I do want to hear how it all works out. Have a look at the For Sale page for more details... I'm off to the garden to take some photos before I make some more updates to these pages this evening.... best wishes and happy chooking, Rosemerry

This lovely boy is free to a good home. He isn't fully grown yet but if you are looking for golden chicks this spring, he is your man.
All JoJo's chicks are roosters. All 5! They are cute little boys if anyone is wanting one. All free. They are too young to see how they turn out but if you want to make sure your rooster is really tame get a really young one like this. Update: 2 August 2013, all roosters have found new homes, thanks everyone. It is very quiet here with just 10 hens, 2 pullets and Bobby & Colin.. All quiet in the chook yard, except for Beatrix that is. She makes more noise than either rooster. She is becoming a really grumpy old lady. Sometimes she thinks she is a goose and really gets the honking going. She is excellent - so much fun having a chook with personality.
We have only 1 free rooster left - perhaps I should name him, something exotic because he is so golden and fair. Any ideas? Jojo is still sitting on her 8 eggs. None of them have blown up but I floated all the left over ones and had about 1 in 5 looking dodgy so it will be interesting to see how many hatch. We ate the good ones in our Shrove Tuesday pancakes. :) We have lots of new fresh eggs - about 4 each day, so if anyone wants to buy any please send a note. Five families collecting free roosters this morning. It is great to see so many city kids growing up breeding chooks. Best of luck and lots of chicks to you!
JoJo is already clucky so we'll give her some eggs. These eggs are the oldest so cross our fingers that they will still hatch. They are the last eggs from Gilbert the rooster before he was eaten by the dog! Jasmine is back from Wembly Primary. She had 6 lovely little chicks and many admirers. It was a very successful experiment. Hopefully we can repeat it next year.
Eustace has found a new family. I hope he will be be happy with you Suzie and do all the right things! It sounds like a wonderful place with a lovely variety of chooks. We have sold a few chicks and have a few hens on waiting lists so we only have eggs for sale and roosters available free now. Maybe more in Feb but not really sure at the moment. JoJo would like some more eggs to hatch but it is too close to Christmas now so I have taken the nesting boxes out overnight and hopefully she will forget about it soon. Josephine has 7 new little chicks, they were all very strong and we didn't have to help any hatch. 1 of the 8 eggs did nothing and wasn't fertile when I had a final look. We should have candled they to check earlier - I always say that but never get around to it. Josephine is a much better mother than Beatrix and has been busy showing the chicks how to eat their weetbix. This batch has 6 little light brown chicks and 2 golden yellow. I wonder if any will be as light as Josephine?
We have sold so many little hens I am losing track but there are only 3 left. Lots of people are taking roosters too and we only have 8 left. Only one is crowing in the morning yet and the sound just makes you laugh. They are not yet in the proper coop but they will move across next weekend.
While I was away on the weekend my son the salesman - Ted, sold so many chooks I can't believe it. We have only a single 8 week old pullet left ($30). I haven't listed it on the for sale page as there is only one left and we're happy to keep her if no one asks! We haven't had to cull a single rooster yet which always makes me happy particularly when they are so promising. We are going to take a gamble with the up coming batch of chooks as we all reckon we can spot a few hens and we'd rather send people home with hens if we can.
Please send a comment or suggestion or pass my site on to anyone you think will be interested. |
